When she opened her eyes, he saw the understanding in them. The defeat.
"Clark?" She croaked around the oxygen tube, despite knowing the answer.
He shook his head.
"Helen?"
He shook his head again.
She shut her eyes against the grief and he waited for the question It came a heartbeat later in an anguished voice with terrified eyes. "My legs...can't feel...my legs...."
Taking her hand in his, Lex looked into Chloe's eyes and said softly, "I'm sorry."
She turned her head away, the room deathly silent save for the soft beeping of machines.
The unbreakable...had broken.
